vicente wolf: i always respectwhat people go through to put their soul onto a canvas, ontoa stage, onto celluloid. my name is vicente wolf. i'm an interior designerworking in new york. i do commercial andresidential work, plus product design. because of my involvement inthe arts and especially in dance, the director of thejoyce came to me, and she asked me if i had any furnitureto donate to their

rehearsal spaces. linda shelton: the dany studiosare a dance center for dancers to work in, to createnew work, to rehearse pieces. it is a facility with ninestudios, basically a place for dancers to do their work. the joyce has really focusedits efforts on making this space completely affordablefor dance companies. so we really ignored the commonspace until i ran into vicente wolf.

and you might think, well, thecommon space isn't that important for dancers. but he saw them all sittingon the floor. he said, we have to fix this. he asked me what thebudget was, and i told him it was zero. vicente wolf: what i said toher was, why don't i design this space, and we can tryto get people to donate. through architectural digest, through crate &

barrel, we got furniture. pittsburgh paintdonated paint. we've got lighting donated. it's been a labor of love tobe able to bring this space into some sort of a cohesive, pleasant environment for them to be in. we're doing graphic elements togive the space some volume, some substance, andsome design. on the core of the first floor,we are doing all the

names of the different companiesthat rehearse and that appear at the joyce. and part of the painting isgetting templates to do all the names on the walls. you know the convex mirrors thatyou see on the highways to see who's coming? so we did a whole bunch of themon one wall to again play with dimension andwith visuals. stephen petronio: one of thethings i hear a lot from young

dancers is that i movedto city, and i don't have a base, socially. new york can be a lonely andalienating place, especially for a lot of young dancers. everybody is moving so fastand in so many different directions. and when you go to a rehearsalstudio, there's usually a hallway that you'restanding in. so it's really important tocreate a community where

people can hang out,and that's going to be happening here. [music playing] vicente wolf: i think weneed to give back in whatever way we can. for me, it's in acreative way. i have always just respectedwhat it takes to create and do dance, and produce dance. so that's what i havedone for the joyce.

i think everybody should justthink about whether it's charity or creative togive back to society. i think we're all veryself-involved, and it's better to give than to receive. -are you a socialmedia darling? do you like to hang out onfacebook, twitter, pinterest, or even tumblr? if so, you can check us outat all those places. or, of course, you can justclick subscribe right here to
