japanese interior design blog
this is the closet. i'm not allowed to go in there. no, we don't need to... ah, i don't think that'll slide open ok. i don't think we should... i don't think we should open this can of worms. maruchin he's safe. mimei land so here is a novel idea.
how about an apartment tour that's, i guess, a little more hashtag relatable. i don't know. i don't know how you guys live, but this is how we live and i'm showing you guys how we lived in our apartment. this is basically one of our last days in the apartment. there is a little bit of packing going on, but i basically wanted to show you guys exactly how we live in our apartment. it is a 2k, which means two rooms and one kitchen room, as well as a bathroom, obviously in tokyo, japan. we live very centrally in tokyo, japan and we pay 80 000 yen a month for rent. i live with my husband and our cats. we have two cats and this is how we live.
this is just real life. so i know a lot of you guys are gonna think, oh my god this is the size of a postage stamp. but actually this is a fairly good size, especially for the amount we are paying in rent. it's pretty hard to find a place this size for that price but the building is quite old, so that's why it's a little bit cheaper duncan has a large comic book collection and i've really done what i can with the space but like the kitchen space is like really hard to work with. sooo... and we also have a bed that's just too big for our apartment. so, yeah, there is a lot that i think could be improved on, especially by someone who is way better
at doing like interior design stuff than i am. but this is just how we live. draw whatever conclusion you want. that's totally fine. i'm just gonna show you guys the reality of how we live here in tokyo, japan. you'll have seen a lot of it in our videos, but this is the first time we are doing a real apartment tour look at this! he came to see me. i'm sitting on his bed. the postage stamp apartment. first things first: yes, the apartment allows pets.
we had to search specifically for an apartment that allows pets and foreigners because i am a foreigner. that means we had to put down extra months rent when we moved in for the pets, not the foreigner. and it costs 80 000 yen a month, that's about 685 us dollars at the time i'm making this video it's located very centrally in shinjuku ward, around yotsuya, which is a place actually features in "your name", the film. so check out "your name", you can see some beautiful scenes of yotsuya that are very realistically drawn. ok, so here is the layout of our place and the first room at the top is what they call a western-style room. so it's not tatami, it's just like flooring and on the right hand side you can see a closet.
the next room down, the pink one, it says dining kitchen but i would say it's just like a kitchen room and then to the right, in the blue, is the toilet and bath area. and then the little grey thing is the genkan, the place where you come in and take your shoes off. the room below there in green is a japanese style tatami mat room and to the right there is another little closet. an then that big white space is the veranda, where in the corner there's some space for the washing machine. so if you ever rent a place in japan, these are the kind of room layouts you are going see when you are looking for a place. but enough of that. let's go inside! this is what the outside of the building looks like. as you can see it's sandwiched between two other buildings
and we are right at the top, on the fourth floor. that feeling when you are super happy to be filming an apartment tour. okay, yay, now that i've made a fool of myself, let's go inside! the first thing you're gonna to see as i go inside is the genkan area where you take off your shoes, you dirty animal. yeah, there it is. this is what it looks like in the picture and this is what it looks like being used in real life by real people who wear shoes. and this is our security camera that just hooks over the side of the door. as you can probably tell by this awesome chain we have here that the building is pretty old
often appartments will have a little shoe closet here but ours didn't so i added this thing from nitori i think and cat. okay, so we're gonna be going to the bedroom first and yup, this is how we cover up the hole in the wall. here we go, into the bedroom catlab. this is the closet and... it's full of secrets so i can't show you.
this is the bed, which is way too big for the room big mistake yeah, we're great at adulting this is duncan's corner, where he edits all his videos this is where the magic happens. just in case i need to brush my teeth. and we put our little monitor for our security camera here. no one's there. and this is where my videos are all edited and made.
i like to think of this is my little corner of the house. oops, forgot to turn the aircon off. aircon guys. it's awesome. anyways, this is my little corner of the house where my stuff goes and i have a whole big mix of makeup and personal items and just like techy stuff and camera stuff 'cause i'm a nerd.
cinnamon kind of thinks he owns my computer and who knows, maybe he does. and these are gifts from fans and friends and my vitamins and contact lenses and more makeup, just more of my corner of the house. and just down there is our medicine. now let's go outside. this is what it looks like in a picture and this is what it looks like irl (in real life).
pretty great view, in my opinion. right across from an office building, where the guys like to stand on the balconies and smoke all day. they really do guys, they really do. that's the street from our house and more of the smoky building and this is the view! i loved this view it's just beautiful, but to be honest we didn't use this big balcony for much except for doing the washing on.
i just wish that our room could've been the size of the balcony looks like he wants us to come inside so let's go to the kitchen room. here are the pictures and here's what it -- oh my gosh i know, it's full of stuuuuuuuff! my tea collection, and then we have an espresso maker and we have a toaster oven. yep, that's a bit broken isn't it
a little bit broken. here's our fridge and here's the litter box modeled my cinnamon. now, we separate all our rubbish into burnable and unburnable plastic, can and bin. they're pretty strict about rubbish rules in japan and we follow them pretty strictly. our microwave is pretty awesome and basically our food is all just stuffed into boxes here, yeah, i know.
more food. cat. here's our gas cooker, it basically has a bare flame to cook on. and moving along to the coffee maker. now the coffee maker, some toothbrushes and toothpaste and this is where we get our hot water for washing dishes from and it's also gas operated i'm sorry, guys, this is getting ridiculous
we're real people! that's hot water, this is cold water, you can adjust the heat. under the sink there's some space and in here we keep our cups and our plates and some, like, sauces and also a roach motel! yay, real life. now let's head to the most hated room in the house, the really old bathroom and toilet
and here we have the infamous toilet roll holder that cut duncan's thumb open. and this is our toilet you can wash your hands with that water, it's totally clean and economical now the bath is like really annoying aside from the fact that you can reheat the water which i think is really cool and economical. the shower is also kind of annoying
because there's nowhere to put it. so you can't, like, stand up and have a shower. you have to hold the showerhead. i have no idea why there is fake blood on the windowsill, and i don't want to know. here is our bath. the bath is square-shaped, as you can see. i'm not going to show you the inside because the paint is peeling off and it's kind of gross. now this is me demonstrating how hard it is to turn on the hot water.
it always took me at least three times. ugh! so annoying. so old! ok. enough of all that frustration. let's go to the biggest room in the house, and this is the room we use to record videos and store stuff. it's chaos in here. basically this is a disaster zone. this is comic books. this is... guess what! comic books?
yep. and that's like, my record player is in there. i'm sending those comic books off to like, a youtuber that i like. there's comic books in here, there's comic books in here. this is my pop vinyl collection, i think i said in another video that half of them are from viewers, which i am very grateful for. and up here instead of a curtain there's some of my coats and duncan's stuff. we're clearly very organized. these are all of the props
like the clothes and stuff that i wear in videos. and these are all of my *clicking fake gun* guns yeah, the real estate lady thought it was real i lost it, and i didn't know where i put it, and it was on the floor, and she was like "is that real?!" and i'm like, "no, it's japan!"
these are all of duncan's clothes this is my whole clothes collection! ok, and these are my clothes. that's my clothes, those are my clothes, not really sure what's going on here that's just a bag and i think that needs to be sorted through, because i'm not sure what's in there the cats have been sleeping in it and destroying it.
that's my set, it's a sofa bed so when we visitors they can sleep on the sofa bed but most of the time it's just for cats. we have a tripod, some more tripods, and i don't know what's under here, because duncan is the one who does that. *duncan, in the background* "what's under there? tripods?" and... um... boxes?" then if we turn around, it's the cat tower you will know well if you watch our videos. he wants to show you how tough he is.
there's the cat tower. there's the boxes. if you thought we lived in a postage stamp, i guess you're right. this is what the room looks like. *duncan, in the backgroun* "yeah! and like, most people, when they come " *mimei* "you can see right through to our bedroom" *duncan* "when people do collabs, and then i say this is where i record! in this little space here!
they're like 'what?!' mimei: this is how small duncan's set actually is. when two people, when i do a collab with someone we're like squeezed together one person here, one person here, and we're like that's the end of the tour, i hope you guys enjoyed it, and i hope that it shed some light on what it's like to live in tokyo, japan. if you enjoyed this video please hit the 'like' button and consider subscribing to my channel! thank you so much for watching to the end of the video
and i'll see you guys soon! pineapple peace!
