my name is mia hull and i'm an applied design professor. the applied design major is so much more than just learning hand skills. it's about learning to become a problem-solver. a good maker solves problems in a very unusual, non-linear way… and employers are noticing that unique skill. it makes our graduates sought after as a huge asset for any company. we take tremendous pride in our traditional craft heritage, but our students also embrace new technology, working with cnc routers and 3d printers. people that are passionate about design—andmaking objects—tend to find their way into
retail-visual jobs, education, building houses,or building exhibitions for museums. a friend recently said: "a life as an artist is not a career, it's a way of life."
